Description

Vermentino is widely planted throughout the Mediterranean, often along the shore lines of both coasts and islands, where it produces bright clean lively wines with classic sea spray and wild herb characters. However, it is in the mountains on the island of Sardinia where it is considered to produce some the best wines. Here the wines are richer but still with elegance and an ability to have earthy mineral spectrum. These wines provided the inspiration for our first Vermentino.

The grapes were whole bunch pressed and the juice drained directly into older french barrels for fermentation. The resulting wine was left on lees in the barrels for six months before course filtration and bottling.

This wine is pale yellow in colour with slight green tinges. The wine has aromas of white peach and grapefruit with a background of spice and herbs. The palate is rich and flavoursome with salinity, slight fresh almond bitterness and a stony spectrum finish.

Vermentino is incredibly versatile, a brilliant pairing for any recipe with fish and herbs. This more complex style is particularly suited to richer fish dishes, stews, grilled sardines with eggplant puree and tarragon dressing.

A lively, zesty, pithy wine that has textural things in common with fiano, although its mix of white stone fruit and savoury relish flavours are quite different.

What Orange lacks generally in prowess of red wines, it’s leaping forth with whites. Vermentino may not be the path paved with gold, but it sure makes for a different thing to drink in the light, dry white department. Kudos to David Hook for exploring.
Light, fresh, simple, scullable white wine here. Whiffs of cucumber in tonic water, touch of stone fruit, shows the same in flavours set on tingly acidity and crisp texture. A bit washed out in flavour but doesn’t matter in the scheme of ‘drinkability’; this is an easy guzzler destined for warmer days, or turning up the air con and pretending.

A scented nose with glacé pear aromas. The palate is full, textural and fruity with gentle warming spice on the finish. It is a riper style of vermentino, and I enjoy the intensity and the palate weight. A good food win

The Central Ranges aren’t exactly a Vermentino hot spot. A fair wine this.

Plenty of easy drinking appeal here. Chill it hard and summer time becomes relax time. An ever so slight squeeze of citrus and a whiff of lemon meringue, delivery is smooth and consistent from gate to post. A dash of spice to finish but there’s also a fresh herb character to intrigue.

Drink now to three years.

Light, bright yellow colour; fresh herb and baked lemon pudding aromas; a little acetate or alcohol lift on the nose and heat on the finish. A decent drink
