Description

This wine is produced from grapes grown at Pothana Vineyard on clay with limestone sub soils. The vines are old and low yielding, producing less than 2 tonnes per acre annually. The fruit was ripe clean and in excellent condition when it was hand picked in mid February. The grapes were fermented in traditional open fermenters, which were hand plunged and then basket pressed. The resulting wine was stored in French oak barrels for 12 months. After blending, the wine was only lightly fined, followed by light filtration prior to bottling.

Harvest Date: 22nd February 2016

Bright ruby hues with a touch of purple, subtle aromas of spice, pepper and savoury oak. The palate delivers the classic hunter hints of leather, pepper, vanilla and blackberries.

Chargrill an eye fillet or a rich, hearty beef casserole

Gary Walsh Wine Front

November, 2016

Hunter Shiraz must be one of the world’s most distinctive wine styles.
Red earth and new leather, spiced toasty oak, blackberry and raspberry. Medium bodied, earth and savoury flavours, yet clean and fresh, with spiced mixed berries, grainy open knit tannin, and a crisply acidic finish of fine length. It’s still coming together, this one, but looks like its going to have the legs to run a long time.

Huon Hooke The Real Review

Deep red/purple colour. The aroma is dusty, earthy, chocolaty and possibly stalky (from whole bunches), the palate intense and bright with nervy acidity and masses of dense, fleshy tannins. The wine has terrific concentration, extract and flesh, even if the acidity is on the high side. It’s well worth cellaring.

James Halliday James Halliday Wine Companion 2017

October, 2016

Very good colour; an expressive and complex bouquet with black fruits, spice and sweet polished leather, the medium-bodied palate picking up where the bouquet leaves off, perfectly proportioned and balanced, black fruits and spices in abundance. Oh that I should live so long to enjoy these wines as they move towards maturity 20+ years hence. Their future is guaranteed by their inherent elegance and balance.
